Lead has been banned from most applications, including fuel additives, pipes and inks, but remains ubiquitous in batteries for power applications for lack of a better alternative. Our carbon-based supercapacitors reduce the lead footprint, due to their easy adoption, optimized performance, low cost, and safe and long-lasting operation at a wide temperature range. 

The use of leaded petrol has now come to an end, as Algeria is finally eliminating it from petrol. The addition of lead in petrol was a practice introduced in 1922, and it was a “catastrophe for the environment and public health”, according to the UN.

Lead-acid batteries are highly recycled, but the way lead enters into the beginning of the value chain differs from country to country. According to the World Health Organisation, lead exposure caused 50B€ of estimated economic costs and, based on 2016 data, there were 495,550 deaths and 9.3 million disability-adjusted life years due to lead's long term impacts on health.
